Government Takes Action to Address Water Shortage in Jammu
In a major step to tackle water scarcity, the Jammu & Kashmir government has introduced a free water tanker service for areas facing severe shortages in Jammu city. This initiative was approved during a high-level review meeting led by Jal Shakti Minister Javed Ahmed Rana, along with Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo and senior officials.
Ensuring Clean Drinking Water for Residents
The government is committed to providing clean drinking water to all affected communities. Minister Rana assured that free water tankers will be dispatched to critical areas, while other localities will soon benefit from the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and additional water supply projects.
Officials have been directed to conduct ground assessments in water-deficient areas and design effective distribution plans. The minister also emphasized the need for a more user-friendly online portal for water-related services.
Addressing Delayed Water Supply Projects
Highlighting delays in key water projects, Minister Rana urged the Housing and Urban Development Department (HUDD) to fast-track approvals and implementation of pending Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).
Jal Jeevan Mission Progress in Poonch
The review meeting also focused on Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) progress in Poonch district. The Poonch Deputy Commissioner reported that 15 water supply schemes—five each in Mendhar, Surankote, and Haveli—are set for completion within 10 days. Minister Rana instructed that these projects be inaugurated immediately to benefit the public.
Fast-Tracking Development Projects Under CAPEX Budget
Under the CAPEX budget, the government is accelerating infrastructure development. Of 3,151 planned projects, 1,878 have been completed. Officials have been directed to speed up pending projects to ensure timely execution.
Support for 2005 Waltengoo Snowstorm Victims
Minister Rana also addressed the concerns of families displaced by the 2005 Waltengoo snowstorm in Kulgam. He urged authorities to expedite the development of a model colony equipped with essential facilities to ensure their rehabilitation.
This initiative showcases the J&K government’s commitment to resolving water scarcity, accelerating infrastructure projects, and assisting displaced families.
